February 27, 2001 - Former IBF super middleweight champion Charles Brewer has signed a new contract with Peltz Boxing Promotions Inc. of Philadelphia. "This assures Charles and I will be together for the rest of his career," said J. Russell Peltz, who has promoted Brewer's fights since 1992.
Brewer, 31, has a 36-7 record with 26 by knockout. He won the IBF crown in 1997 when he knocked out Gary Ballard in five rounds and went on to make three successful defenses against Joey DeGrandis, Herol Graham and Antoine Byrd.
When Brewer lost the crown via a 12-round split decision, late in 1998 to Germany's Sven Ottke in Dusseldorf, it was considered one of the worst decisions of the year. Three knockout wins later, Brewer returned to Germany and again was a split-decision loser to Ottke.
Though the rematch was closer, the decision was still debatable. In his last fight in December last year, Brewer made his first TV appearance in three years when he knocked out Esteban Cervantes, of West Palm Beach, FL, inside a round. Brewer is now ranked No. 4 by the IBF, No. 9 by the WBA, No. 14 by the WBC.
After signing the new contract, Brewer spoke about the state of the super-middleweight division and his place among the champions and contenders. "We were offered a fight with Omar Sheika on the Hamed-Barrera card on April 7 by Dino Duva, Sheika's promoter," said Brewer. "But when they asked Sheika about fighting me, he said no. Dana Rosenblatt also said no.
"Rosenblatt talks about moving on to better fights, but what he's really saying is that he wants to move on, but only against the right kind of opponent. He's fighting Stephane Ouelett. You gotta be kidding me. I'll fight Rosenblatt at Foxwoods and he can bring his own judges with him. Sheika talks about fighting Alex Hilton. What kind of fight is that?
"These guys walk around asking for big fights, but they seem to forget my name. The WBC title is tied up in Canada by a bunch of guys who won't fight me. We've chased Joe Calzaghe (WBO champ) for three years.
“As for the WBA, I don't know what's going on there. All I can do is wait for a break. I guess I could bang my head against the wall, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I can't force anyone to fight me. I know I'm the best super middleweight in the world. It's just a matter of getting the right fight in front of the right audience."
